The high point this time is a story in which, to answer one person's heartfelt wish, Shiro unearths the memory bound up in a single dish. As he rushes to recreate a nearly lost flavor, he learns anew that more than ingredients or technique, "for whom it is made" decides the taste. Yuzan, too, arrives at the same answer from a different angle and, rarely, quietly acknowledges his son's work. A glimpse of the father's clumsy love that ran beneath their long feud moves the reader. The bond with Kurita deepens a step further, making for a warm close in the manner of the series' later half.
