Right after Enmu falls, Akaza, Upper Rank Three, appears and clashes with Rengoku in a brutal close-quarters battle. Though human, Rengoku fights on the edge of the exalted realm and refuses Akaza's temptation to become a demon, shielding Tanjiro and the others until dawn before his strength gives out. In his final moments he passes on his mother's words and asks Tanjiro to look after his brother. His death sears a deep sense of duty into Tanjiro, whose grief at the fleeing Akaza hardens into resolve.
