A rumor spreads that a ghost has appeared at the headquarters of the Shinsengumi, the special police who keep order in the capital. Hearing the story, the Yorozuya crew heads to the scene with less-than-noble intentions, only to run into a spine-chilling incident. Elsewhere there's a monster lurking in the sea, a biker-gang feud, an uproar over sword confiscation, and an over-the-top crew of drag queens. As always, Edo stays lively. Volume 5 is a varied set where laughs and a little fright live side by side.

Gin Tama Vol. 5 spoilers
⚠️ Spoilers ahead.
The Shinsengumi ghost fuss ultimately turns out to be human paranoia plus the squad's own slapstick chaos, giving lots of screen time to standout characters like Kondo, Hijikata, and Okita. The love-hate bond between the Shinsengumi and the Yorozuya, two groups breathing the same Edo air, really starts to move here. In the sword-confiscation arc, Gintoki's quiet resistance to a world that strips samurai of their blades shows through. Comedy leads the way, but the volume steadily lays the character groundwork for the big conflict arcs to come.
