A mother hires the Yorozuya to find her son Hachiro, who came to Edo and then vanished without a word. When they finally track him down, they discover he has tangled himself in trouble with underworld yakuza, and the situation is far messier than it first appeared. Anchored by this bittersweet tale of a clumsy estrangement between mother and son, the volume also delivers a mock-documentary chapter shadowing the fugitive Katsura, a dumpling-eating contest, and a bombshell for Shinpachi: a man suddenly turns up claiming to be the fiance of his sister Otae.

Gin Tama Vol. 13 spoilers
⚠️ Spoilers ahead.
Hachiro had been running dangerous errands to pay off debts, but he was only piling up lies to keep his mother from worrying; at heart he is an honest young man. With a push from Gintoki and the others, mother and son finally speak their true feelings and reconcile. The Katsura documentary chapter mines laughs from the oddly principled daily life of a wanted man, reaffirming his unshakable convictions. Otae's fiance uproar turns out to be no real engagement at all, exploding into comedy through the contrast between a panicking Shinpachi and an utterly unfazed Otae. Quiet hints toward the upcoming Yagyu arc are also seeded in.
