On the way to the northern plateau, Frieren coordinates with her mage escorts while recalling the road she once traveled with the hero's party. Before long they confront the strange calamity of the city ruled by Macht of the Golden Land, one of the Seven Sages. Macht is an arch-demon who, out of a twisted desire to understand humans, turned the city's people into statues of gold. It is hinted that he once failed at trying to live alongside humans here, and his loneliness and madness come to the surface. Frieren and the others are drawn into the mystery of this golden land and the trap left behind by the great mage who once sealed Macht. The stage is set for the full confrontation of the next volume.
