Kaito Kid sends two heist notices to his arch-rival Jirokichi Suzuki, declaring he will target the impregnable strongbox known as the Iron Tanuki. Inspector Nakamori dismisses the first note as a fake based on its style and mark, but he is certain the second, placed inside the vault room itself, is the real thing. Suspicion falls on three recently hired staff, a bodyguard, a servant, and a maid, yet Jirokichi refuses to let anyone investigate his own people without proof and retreats to his room. Volume 65 brings the battle of wits between Kid and Jirokichi to a peak, racing toward a brilliant finale modeled on a famous tale of Zhuge Liang.

Case Closed Vol. 65 spoilers
⚠️ Spoilers ahead.
Rather than hiding by disguising himself as one of the three staff, Kid turned Jirokichi's very security net against him, aiming to crack open the Iron Tanuki itself. Slipping past the trap Inspector Nakamori laid, Kid claims his prize, only to hand it back to Jirokichi in the end. True to the chapter title "Dead Zhuge Liang routs the living Sima Yi," a contrivance Jirokichi left behind outmaneuvers even Kid, and their duel of wits settles into a satisfying draw. Conan, too, watches the truth unfold from the shadows, and the curtain falls without Kid's identity ever being exposed.
