Volume 10 of Case Closed brings a landmark debut: Heiji Hattori, the high-school detective from Osaka who will become Conan's greatest ally. Arriving as the "Detective of the West," Heiji burns with rivalry toward the "Detective of the East," Shinichi Kudo, and starts closing in on Conan's true identity. Their clashing deductions at an inn make for one of the series' finest battles of wits. Alongside it, a water-based time-lag trick and a killer stalking a snowbound lodge deliver classic mysteries that entwine locked rooms with the forces of nature.

⚠️ Spoilers ahead.
The Detective of the West, Heiji Hattori, witnesses Conan's reasoning and cuts right to it—"You're Kudo, aren't you?"—closing in on his secret. At the inn, both Heiji and Conan reach the truth, but it's Conan who lands the decisive blow, exposing a time-lag trick where the killer used water freezing and melting to shift the apparent time of death. In the snowbound lodge, with all outside contact cut off, a killer picks off targets one by one—yet the culprit was someone hiding inside the lodge all along. Conan decodes the meaning of the victim's "last words" and brings the snowbound tragedy to a close.
