In the Phoenix Hall, Nimaiya Oetsu reforges Ichigo's blade, and the true form of Zangetsu, long left incomplete, is finally revealed. Deep in the Muken, Unohana tells Kenpachi that she was the very first Kenpachi and, to draw out his full power, wages a duel to the death against him. Her aim is to make him remember the fear of cutting and to open the door to his true strength. At the end of a savage clash, Kenpachi strikes Unohana down, and she dies with a satisfied smile. In exchange for loss, the Soul Reapers seize new power to resist the Quincy.
