Sosuke Aizen, supposedly dead, appears in the Soul Society without a scratch. Hinamori weeps at the return of the captain she adored, but her joy freezes in an instant: with utter cold-bloodedness, Aizen's blade runs her through without a moment's hesitation. As she collapses in blood, Toshiro Hitsugaya loses himself to rage and grief. Now the grand conspiracy Aizen has woven, and the true purpose hidden behind Rukia's execution, are finally revealed. It was all a chessboard drama staged by one man, and the Gotei 13 had been dancing in his palm from the very start. The full scope of the betrayal shakes the Soul Society to its roots.

Bleach Vol. 20 spoilers
⚠️ Spoilers ahead.
Aizen faked his own death and staged a coup alongside Gin Ichimaru and Kaname Tosen. The true aim of Rukia's execution was to safely extract the ultimate vessel hidden inside her, the Hogyoku; the Sokyoku's flames were merely a device to burn away its seal. Even stabbing Hinamori was a coldly calculated move. Hitsugaya lunges in fury but is swatted aside by the sheer gap in power. Aizen seizes the Hogyoku and departs serenely for Hueco Mundo. Here the Soul Society arc concludes, and the curtain rises on the long war toward the final showdown.
